Hazards to Sanitation Personnel
regarding disposal of CRTs

The Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) in a discarded computer contains major amounts of lead in addition to traces of mercury, phosphorous, and cadmium. These materials are critical to the functionality of the computer monitor.

Although essential to the operation of the system's electronics and safely sealed while in operation. Pollution and health risks may be prompted if these hazardous materials are allowed to escape into the environment.

The only safe acceptable method of disposal of the CRT is recycling the components. The controlled process of smelting of the glass safely and properly removes all hazardous substances.

In the event of accidental breakage or incineration these hazardous materials inadvertently become airborne or seep in the water table via landfill disposal.

Either way, airborne or in consumable water, these noxious substances especially the lead, can be an imminent dynamic health hazard if they are breathed or ingested in appreciable quantities.

Concerning accidental breakage or incineration, at particular risk are sanitation personnel who handle, truck away or incinerate these toxic materials.

Workers are cautioned to take the following precautions in the event of accidental breakage or incineration.

  • Breakage - The immediate area should be quarantined and allowed to settle without further disturbance. Workers should don gloves and masks while they gently dampen the breakage with a gentle water spray to further prevent spreading of the contamination while masked and gloved, the breakage should be gathered boxed and forwarded for recycling with the intact units. Clothing should be changed and hands thoroughly washed before eating.

  • Incineration - There is not much which can be done once accidental incineration begins. Wherever possible the incineration should be terminated and the same safety steps employed in the breakage category.
